Ed Yoder had been making wine in his basement for several years. He served his “hobby wine” to friends and family at various holidays and special events. Then one day Ed’s daughter asked him to make some special wine for her wedding. Well the rest is, as they say, history.

Ed’s wine went over so well that many people urged him to start making wine for sale and he opened Raintree Cellars in 2007. The wines available have interesting names, such as Fuzzy Blossom, Straw Patch, and Ed Red. If you ask Ed he will give you the story behind each. Ed loves to share his knowledge of Germany and the German people he met while serving in the military there. He is a great story teller. After visiting for awhile we decided to grab a bottle to go. We picked up a bottle of Red Knob and enjoyed the sweet fruity wine on our back porch last Sunday afternoon.

The winery is a small building located close to interstate 40 at Icard, NC. This is a small winery perched up on a hill and it is easy to get to, but don't be alarmed to find the surroundings are smattered with chicken coops and outbuildings.
