It was late on a Saturday afternoon and Janet and I found ourselves sitting at a small tasting room in Mocksville, NC talking about a variety of things with winery owners Bob and Sonya Whitaker.
We talked about Lake Norman, the Vietnam War, pottery, Knoxville Tennessee, Dragonflies, and the Yankee invasion of Charlotte. I was enjoying a glass of Garden Gate Scarlet Blush. It was pretty clear to us that the most unique thing about this winery was the owners. They were the essence of southern hospitality.
The wine was good too and the tasting room was interesting.
Sonya explained to us the significance of the dragonflies that grace their labels and seems to be the muse for much of her art. Sonya is also a potter. You can see her work all around the winery.
We found out that locally grown fruit is an important feature of Garden Gate Vineyards and we also learned that they produce a variety of fruit wines. They produce blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, muscadine, and scuppernong wines. They also produce some others we found interesting such as Scarlet Blush Autumn Red, and Jitterbug.
They have a nice place outdoors to sit and drink some wine. The arbor had tables but February is no time to sit outside even in the south. We like that they don’t use pesticides on their grapes. They told us that their weapon of choice against pests was bluebirds. They love to watch them out on their lawn as they chase away other birds and eat the insects.
Bob and Sonya are good folks, they make you feel welcome and they make delicious wines. Janet liked the semi-sweet muscadine and it was no surprise that I preferred the sweet muscadine.
