Weathervane Winery was on our list of three wineries we set out to visit last Saturday near Welcome, NC. The day we went it was incredibly crowded. They were hosting a pre-Super Bowl party with wine and Chili. The chili smelled so strong that it made Janet not want to taste the wine and it made me want to taste the chili. The tasting room was completely jammed pack and there was a line at the tasting bar so we decided to select our bottle and taste it later. We browsed the available wines with names such as Harvest Moon, Ionosphere, Evening Breeze, Blue Norther, Cirrus Red, and Sweet Mountain Bliss. We couldn’t tell if Cirrus Red was a Merlot or a Syrah or what. Frankly the names confused us. Janet chose the Grand Vieux Chateau du Roi - Go figure. Even though we didn’t sit in on a tasting we did notice some interesting things about this winery. They had a really big, bright tasting room filled with people. The parking lot was packed with cars on a snowy Saturday and there was a bottle tree out front that reminded Janet of her Appalachian upbringing.
A couple of evenings later we cooked beef tenderloin medallions with Au Jus, baked sweet potatoes with butter and brown sugar, and Asiago cheese bread. We opened the bottle of Grand Vieux Chateau du Roi
And were completely floored at what a perfect complement this wine was to our meal. Clearly based on some of the cute names assigned to the wine flavors we underestimated the serious deliciousness of their wines. We plan to return and sample the rest of their wines as well as pick up another bottle of the Grand Vieux Chateau du Roi.
